Day 18 (July 16): Naples to Venice

Woke up today in Naples, took a train to Rome with Steve and Adina and then split from them so they could take advantage of their bus pass. We caught a train 15 minutes after landing in Rome and landed in Venice around 9:30pm. Walked through one town, and then back to another to find out that there are no hotels anywhere because we arrived the night of Venice’s huge festival with fireworks. After spending about 45 minutes trying to get out of Venice and towards hotels, we decided to go straight to Venice, party it up and sleep in the streets. Luckily we found a place to leave our luggage, and even found a hostel with one last room! Why did they have a room when everything within 15 miles was booked? Because the room had no key and the travelers from the night before had broken the bed. So we took it and when we finally found the place again at around 3:45am after getting blitzed walking around St. Marc’s Plaza, I put my mattress against the door and used my body as a door jam. Venice is absolutely amazing, and clean!! Cleanest place yet and easiest/most fun place to get lost in. On the way back from the Rialto bridge it took about 10 vaguely English speaking Italians to help us find our hostel, luckily we had stumbled within 5 minutes of the place by the time we got completely lost and even then it took at least half an hour before anyone figured out where we were standing, let alone where we wanted to go. After a long night I fell asleep to a gently spinning room.
