Simple (buffet) breakfast followed by two large beers while waiting for the train. In a drunken impulse I purchased a sweet happy meal, and finally got some French fries and a kids toy. I was expecting more from the toy, I don’t know why.. it’s just that a toy tiger that’s left arm twists at the shoulder, and right arm touches a stick of bamboo that moves one inch when pushed was way under my level of expectations. For the same effort something could have been way more cool, I just can’t imagine the three year olds I see with iTouches being pleased with crap. Anyway, after 7 1/2 hours of card games, talking and sleeping, we arrived in Amsterdam with Steve and Adina waiting to escort us to a coffee shop. Oh yes, we brought the rainstorm with us to Amsterdam. Fabulous, queue ridiculous and slightly cute red riding hood poncho.

I don’t get the feeling this “coffee” shop sells much coffee, maybe soda, chips and candy bars, but the real bar is at the end of the room, with a man wearing a dealer shirt and a few shelves full of weed behind him for our viewing and purchasing pleasure. Steve casually buys some and we use Dad’s new pipe. Prices are damn decent and so’s the product. The coffee shop is in the red light district, didn’t see any of the expected sex workers in the windows but apparently the city is trying to “straighten up its image” and reduce the numbers of smoking and sex work establishments. Great, ruin the one city that doesn’t criminalize activity that should be a matter of personal choice. Hopefully Amsterdam lightens up, or at least the locals don’t enforce the issue. At least we’re here now, and weed’s legal medicinal purposes in California anyway. I suppose less tourist gawking of the sex workers might be a safer for them, I’ll learn more before I make judgments.

Headed to the sweet ass hotel that was offering its rooms at 1/4th the price, (lastminutehotels.com), and enjoyed delicious Belgium beer compliments of Steve. Amsterdam is great so far, and it doesn’t hurt that this is the first place in three weeks where everybody speaks and understands English. Not that being in non-English speaking countries was all that much trouble (it was mostly fun and humbling), but it is a lot harder to get around and buy tickets when nobody understands what you’re saying. After having stayed up till almost 5am now it’s time to get to bed and look forward to morning coffee. Actual coffee.

Rainy as shit today, and way cold. So on meeting with the Aussie couple for breakfast we decided to nix our plans from the night before to go on a four hour bicycle tour and instead went for a bus tour, our first of this entire trip. It wasn’t bad considering how much of Berlin we got to see in the pouring rain, wind and shivering cold, but they passed by Checkpoint Charlie and the Berlin Wall without even a pause for pictures, so once the tour was over Dad went back to the hotel and I went out exploring Berlin. Checkpoint Charlie was closed due to rain, so I couldn’t get my passport stamped but I got tons of pictures, and with my long arm even managed to get a few with me in them! Then I headed off to the Berlin Wall, which turned out to be the relocated artistic version, but it was the legitimate wall, just placed where it could be more easily and conveniently viewed. The actual pieces that remain in their original location happen to be out of the roads, but the rest of where the wall used to be can be seen in a brick line, that is usually crossing roads, parking areas, and other inconvenient places for viewing. While walking along the wall I even found a place with all the stamps for Checkpoint Charlie, the wall jumper, DDR and all that other fancy business that makes my Passport look sweet. Then I realized it was almost six o’clock, and that it would be approaching four hours since I had left my surely antsy Dad, so I found a post office and a bank and headed back to the hotel. Lo and behold, Dad was sitting nervously in the lobby, having realized once we separated that I not only didn’t have a cellphone to call him, but I didn’t even have the business card to our hotel in case something went wrong. Nothing did though and all was well, so we headed up to the bar drank some beer, played cards, drank more beer at happy hour, watched the news (the only channel in English, looping the bombing incident in Norway) and then eventually passed out.

Prague was still rainy and cold so we bounced early to catch the train to Berlin. I strangely woke up at 5:30am, thinking the cloudy weather was going to trick me into sleeping in, but luckily got to use that time to skype with Cassidy. The train was 5 hours, and we arrived in Berlin in time for more rain and cold, hiked a bit to find a hotel/hostel and found it to be some of the nicest accommodations we’ve found so far. 24/7 bar, complimentary drink for each of us, wifi in the room! Oh except they didn’t mention we have to pay for it and it would only be on the computer of the person to log on first… Dad’s. But we managed fine and after dropping our stuff in the room headed up to the 5th floor bar. Found an older Aussie couple and got fairly trashed with them. At 68 and 72 I don’t know how they could handle it, but neither looked over 60 and they’re cyclists and fairly professional travelers, so they must be used to this sort of thing. Dinner consisted of a microwaved lasagna hunk from the lobby “restaurant” but we were full of beer anyway so it worked out. Passed out half way dizzy hoping the weather would improve.

Hopped on the metro and then to the train to head to Prague today. Long rainy train ride, sleeping, reading and more sleeping. Landed in rainy and after booking our next train we stepped out of the station to be greeted by someone looking to fill their hotel. Followed the man down the street into one locked gate, another locked gate, up the stairs into one locked door, and then the second locked door into the cheapest available room. Smelled musty and the emptiness of the place was creepy so we decided to check out the nearest hotels. Expensive hotels, hostels without wifi, and then finally a hostel with wifi! Except that location was full, so we would be escorted to the nearest location. Lo and behold we came upon the same man who offered the original hotel for cheap and with wifi! It was a sign, so we took it, dropped our stuff and found the nearest bar for cheap beer and some delicious Czech food. Got to use our ponchos and I used my backpack’s rain gear too. Finally a place to stay with decent internet for my mini laptop’s mini router, thank you Henry for providing an Ethernet cable.

The seats reclined pretty far down but were still damned uncomfortable, especially with a couple uptight Americans next to us, waking up at many stops, being passport checked by cops and having the Americans leave the compartment at 6am. Finally we landed around 9am, found the closest hotel so we could wifi Steve and then went back to the station to book tickets for tomorrow to Prague. Our trip is ending quickly so we are starting to do some serious country hopping. Strolling randomly through Vienna, past the busy shopping area and into some huge and beautiful buildings we found Volksgarten (big garden with roses and all). One of those parks where you’re not supposed to step on the grass because it’s a historical site. So I did and even got a picture as evidence. Nobody cared and many were having picnics and sunbathing. Found a film festival and ate some delicious food. Drank a bitter spritzer! It said bitter, but it was red and had an orange, so it’s gotta be tasty! Wrong. It was bitter and gross and I chugged it. Then after complaining of tiredness I told Dad I would get a Red Bull. Once I opened it Dad said he wanted to take a nap.. so I showed him my drink and he seemed to silently agree to walk a little more first.

Finally made enough pleading noises to get us to the Aquarium zoo and it was awesome. We got to touch the coy and see jelly fish, sharks, snakes, porcupine fish, mambas, bats and monkeys!! Little bitty monkeys that some little boy fed hamburger bun and then got to pet them! I was a good person who did not feed them any food (I didn’t have any) and followed the rules and did not pet them (seeing I was without food they would not come near me). Then we walked up to the very top of the aquarium zoo tower and saw all of Vienna (this zoo was built as a skyscraper… very eerie and full of tons of water). Vienna is really, really full of buildings. Massive buildings that fill entire blocks and each of them works of art, literally as far as the eye can see (and at 10 stories high the eye can see a long way). On the way down the tower we found another room with more monkeys and bats. I didn’t mention before that both halves of this huge exhibit containing monkeys and lots of other types of birds and even some bats were completely open. There are signs saying don’t touch or feed the animals but everything is fully open with birds flying at our heads, bats flying around and monkeys climbing onto benches and the walkways trying to get food from people. I’m not even clear on how all these animals are able to cohabitate but they seem to. There are even water exhibits within these huge open areas — filled with alligators, biting turtles and all kinds of fish. Awesome insanity. Oooh there was one space for children to poke their heads up into a bubble and look into an aquarium that simulated the ocean. So I joined and fit better than they did, the little shrimps.

After leaving the wonderful and exciting water zoo I dragged dad down into the next door torture museum. It was terrible and way creepy. Wax people in all kinds of torture devices, with an English version of the device descriptions to help us experience more horror. I cannot believe I got Dad to pay for this. Not only was it terrible and depressing but it was ridiculously short. If I’m going to pay to be horrified I want it down properly and for a long enough amount of time. Some of the torture devices we saw include but are not limited to the following: thumb screws, stocks, being burned at the stake, being boiled alive, the iron maiden, the iron maiden chair thing, the wheel and many more that I don’t care to remember. Having escaped the torture of the torture museum, we found a hidden grocery store and bought some wine and cheese to go with our crackers. Headed back to the hotel for Dad’s nap and my internet surfing. Currently chilling on very comfortable beds in the nicest hotel we’ve been in on the whole trip. Lovely and relaxing, can’t wait to experience a soft bed.

Delicious breakfast this morning, lovely shower and then spent all day wandering around Venice. Took the boat bus through the city to Lido, and then around the top of the city back to the train station. Yesterday we went around the bottom of the city to St. Marco’s Square so we literally have circled and gone through every main passage of Venice, and touched every boat bus stop (except for the cemetery island and parking lot). Today we saw four pigeons missing some or all of the toes on one foot and a seagull with a foot problem too… they were all in the same area. Maybe there’s a mean cat around? Anyway, about to get on an eleven hour train, so hopefully we get some decent sleep in the seats that surely won’t recline. No rain happened today so my tan is coming along quite nicely and our ponchos have still gone unused.

Woke up this morning to the sound of ridiculously loud bells 50 feet from our open window and already past check out time. Luckily we paid cash and nobody was coming to clean the severely dysfunctional room so we strolled out into the bright sun and stumbled for coffee. After grabbing our pay by the hour luggage we found a nice, clean functional room with wifi, AC and a shower for the same price as the B.S. hostel from last night. Finally, oh finally a shower. Sure it was too small to turn around in without touching every bit of the curtain and anyone suffering from claustrophobia would have seizured, but it was pretty wonderful anyway. By the time I was completely ready to go out the door Dad was in a deep nap.. so I got into napping clothes and slept for a bit too. Then we went out for a boat bus to St. Marco’s, had dinner, ice cream and a nice long slightly lost but very beautiful walk back to the hotel as it started to drizzle. Tomorrow it is supposedly going to rain and we’ve booked an overnight train to Vienna. Good thing we have ponchos and the hotel (right next to the train station) is letting us leave our bags here.

Woke up today in Naples, took a train to Rome with Steve and Adina and then split from them so they could take advantage of their bus pass. We caught a train 15 minutes after landing in Rome and landed in Venice around 9:30pm. Walked through one town, and then back to another to find out that there are no hotels anywhere because we arrived the night of Venice’s huge festival with fireworks. After spending about 45 minutes trying to get out of Venice and towards hotels, we decided to go straight to Venice, party it up and sleep in the streets. Luckily we found a place to leave our luggage, and even found a hostel with one last room! Why did they have a room when everything within 15 miles was booked? Because the room had no key and the travelers from the night before had broken the bed. So we took it and when we finally found the place again at around 3:45am after getting blitzed walking around St. Marc’s Plaza, I put my mattress against the door and used my body as a door jam. Venice is absolutely amazing, and clean!! Cleanest place yet and easiest/most fun place to get lost in. On the way back from the Rialto bridge it took about 10 vaguely English speaking Italians to help us find our hostel, luckily we had stumbled within 5 minutes of the place by the time we got completely lost and even then it took at least half an hour before anyone figured out where we were standing, let alone where we wanted to go. After a long night I fell asleep to a gently spinning room.

Woke up today at 9:30 in pitch dark. Crazy Dad didn’t realize that our windows had light blockers and thought it was the middle of the night… so then we rushed to get ready and out the door for a day trip to Pompeii. Clean lovely showers today for all, in the bathroom attached to our hotel. Sooo lovely. We even each got our own scratchy mini towel! Better than no towel, a hostel shower that floods with gross water and being afraid to let my feet touch the floor though!

“Friendly Pompeii” as the signs say, is a 2000 year old city preserved by volcanic ash. Preserved as in paintings within the buildings are still intact and plasters were able to be made out of the hollows people’s bodies made in the 20 feet of ash that enveloped everything. Soul soaked ruins. There are literally plaster molds of people on display who are in positions obviously caused by being enveloped in volcanic ash. When the area was excavated they poured plaster into the holes where they knew bodies were so we could see their death poses. One man was praying, and a dog looked like it had been having a fit. Dad bought an audio tour so he could learn all the history and a book about the place too. This is the first place he’s been completely excited about so we followed him around the ruins while he told us tidbits of history, and even gave us the audio bit so we could hear about the brothel and the amphitheater. The brothel had intact pictures of sexual positions to inspire clients. The room with doggie style painted above it had one of the many stray dogs of the ruins sleeping inside. There were graffiti carvings on the walls that have been translated as describing the beautiful women of the time, as well as complaints from clients about having contracted venereal diseases. The amphitheater was not as impressive as the coliseum, but experienced plenty of bloodshed nonetheless and the audio guide gave a rendition of the sounds of music and fighting that would have been heard within it. That part was actually a bit strange. So after many hours we climbed our way out of the maze of ruins, bought some meloncello and headed back to Naples to shower off our films of volcanic ash and grab some dinner.

Dinner was fantastic, with real pizza, pasta and prosciutto with melon. Then we walked off into the dark in search of ice cream to go with the meloncello we bought in Pompeii. Finally found some spongebob ice cream (vanilla with sprinkles) and skipped back to the hotel.

Today we finally escaped that infernal “Peter Pan Hostel.” Never ever land.. as in never ever go there and avoid the sex crazed lost boys. Then we bussed it to the terminal hub and booked an afternoon train to Naples. Before jumping on that we checked out the coliseum. It was strange to think of the thousands and thousands of people and animals that had been slaughtered here for entertainment, and then to look around at the continuing thousands per day who come to see it for exactly that reason, without even seeing the slaughter itself. We heard ahead of time that the line to get inside the place would takes hours so we skipped that and looked through the gated openings instead. Once we soaked in the imagined bloodshed and circled the highly epic coliseum, we walked up the hill quite a bit and checked out the museum of culture and history (actually we just looked at all the statues on top, there were horsies!) Then we headed off to the Naples bus, saw lots and lots of Italy on the way and after checking 5 places or so found a decent, clean hotel with wifi and a fish tank! The outside of all these buildings look abandoned but the inside of this hotel is great and air conditioned! We even have enough beds for each of us AND Steve and Adina finally get to sleep in a bed together! (Adina is a bed hog so they can’t share a twin anymore). Bread and mozzarella cheese for dinner (the rest ate ham and salami too) and some beer. Day finished with a mosquito free, air conditioned room and restful sleep.
